Used boxes tend to be the most convenient ones to get especially from friends, family and even stores but they are not the most reliable. When moving you really want to consider that you are putting your entire life into boxes so there are few things you want to remember when someone offers you boxes for your move.
If the boxes you are using have been used before by someone who has moved or they happen to be from a local grocery store you want to remember that they are not in their brand new shape. You may be thinking that the box looks fine from the outside from it’s actually not. The box is now weakened by the number of things that have been placed inside of it. If you are going to use that same box for heavy objects, the box may break because it can no longer hold the suggest weight requirement. Especially chemicals that could have rubbed off the previous items, previous warehouse, or during transport!
Used boxes cannot be washed or disinfected. No one thinks twice before grabbing a box with their hands and begins putting things inside of it. Your linens, dishes, children's toys are going in that box that has had things you don’t even know about in it. You really want to be careful with this especially if the box has transported food products or could be contaminated with an allergen.
Cardboard naturally gives off a fine dust, depending on how old the box is. If the box is older it will produce more particles of dust which will end up on your things. Even if the boxes are not old but are stored somewhere where dust gathers, it will get into the box and the cardboard can give off a musty old smell with anything inside that box smelling too.
Bugs! Bugs like dark warm places and that’s where boxes come in. If you are not sure where the used boxes you are wanting to use are stored, don’t use them. They could contain bugs that will want to wiggle their way into your items and you are then carrying them into your new home or rather, their new home. You don’t want that. This includes bed bugs!
We know that your immediate reaction to someone offering your their boxes for your move will be a yes, but now that you know about some of the dangers of using someone else's boxes, we highly suggest heading over to our moving boxes and moving kits (that are stored in a smoke and pet free facility) and order yours, today!
